About Ketamine

What is Ketamine?

The most reputable institutions including Yale University, Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, NYU, Massachusetts General Hospital, the Black Dog Institute, and the National Institute of Mental Health have conducted their own clinical tests showing up to a 70% response rate to Ketamine as an antidepressant.

Unlike traditional medications, which can take weeks to months to take effect, Ketamine works within hours after administration. The immediate relief could be life-saving, in cases of severely depressed individuals with suicidal thoughts.

How does Ketamine work?

Since the 1960’s, Ketamine has been used safely as an effective anesthetic for a variety of medical purposes for both children and adults. More recently, Ketamine has been rediscovered  as an efficacious and rapid-acting medication in the treatment of major depressive disorder, bipolar depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), chronic pain and other mood and mental health disorders.

How is it administered?

While Ketamine is an FDA-approved medication, it is essential that individuals are monitored by a professional who specializes in Ketamine therapy, to ensure that proper protocols are followed and all safety precautions are taken.

The patient’s vital signs will be monitored throughout the entire treatment session administration of Ketamine. This is done in the outpatient clinic for approximately one (1) to two (2) hours.

What is the experience like?

Other patients have experienced dizziness, slight nausea, faintness, increase in blood pressure or heart rate, but these too, pass quickly after treatment . Medication may also be given, if necessary to treat these. Overall, most people find the Ketamine experience to be calming and pleasant and with peace of mind knowing that they are constantly being monitored by highly qualified medical staff.

Following the treatment, one may experience slight symptoms as mentioned above and should therefore not drive a car or operate heavy machinery for the rest of the day. Your improvements will be assessed after each treatment session to make sure you are responding appropriately. The results of the treatment will vary individually, based on your mental health history, severity and duration. Maintenance or “booster” treatments may be necessary; the intervals will depend on your specific situation and the collaborative recommendations of your mental health provider.
